The 12th Long Night of the Sciences, which took place at the beginning of July in Halle, was a huge success. Seven hours of hands-on research. Over 320 events. More than 80 participating organisations. Excellent summer weather. The night of science once again attracted thousands of visitors. Between the city centre and Weinberg Campus, researchers from various disciplines shared the content of their work, interesting knowledge and, not least, a lot of entertaining things. “The Long Night confirmed once again how interested the people in Halle are in science and the enjoyment they get from it,” sums up Prof. Dr. Udo Sträter, the rector of MLU.

Heide-Süd was bustling. Without a doubt one of the best crowd pleasers was the great experiment lecture entitled “Chemistry for (nearly) all the senses”. People who wanted to work in agriculture that evening were able to milk a life-sized plastic cow at the Institute for Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe. At University Hospital many visitors determined their biological age, tried out their life saving skills, tested their hearing or tried an endoscopy on a training phantom.

The Francke Foundations also attracted a rush of visitors. Here young guests could attempt to brew a “happiness elixir” in a so-called thinking lab. There weren’t enough seats for everyone at the popular “Science Slams”. In this contest, scientists only have a few minutes to present their area of expertise in the most entertaining way. It’s a good thing that the Slam was streamed live on University Square.

Another crowd pleaser was the Fairy Tale Moot Court “Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” a simulated court trial with legal experts. In addition to the well-attended colourful programme on University Square, another of the highlights was, once again, the large firework display at Von-Seckendorff-Platz. Unusual colours like pink, purple, violet, orange and turquoise lit up the night sky accompanied by music.
