A mammoth undertaking

Libraries had 20 years to check their holdings for books that had been taken into their possession as a result of expropriations in the context of post-WWII land reform – with the goal of returning such books to their rightful owners. That period ended in late November. The University and State Library (Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek, ULB) lost thousands of books but also acquired new partners. Read more

13th Long Night of the Sciences: Da Vinci robot and the World Cup host Brazil

Science and football can live in harmony, as proven by the 13th annual Long Night of the Sciences in Halle which took place on 4 July. Visitors came sporadically at the beginning, but then, after a jubilant quarterfinal match, thousands came until the wee hours of the morning for a “research adventure”. Jubiles spurs on research

On 31 October 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against indulgences on the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg. This brought about the Reformation movement which went on to fundamentally change theology, the Church and society. The year 2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of this event prompting numerous scientific, religious and cultural activities around the world. Martin Luther University, which bears the name of the great reformer, will mark the anniversary with a wide range of academic initiatives and activities. Read more

An emotional journey to the ancestors

The relatives of eight professors barred from the university during the Third Reich travelled to Halle at the end of November 2013 for an act of commemoration. Getting to know the place where their ancestors worked was for many not only a journey in time, but also a very intensive experience. Read more
